The Portuguese town of Torres Vedras will host the 2022 Concours Mondial du Sauvignon

Communiqué de presse

The 13th Concours Mondial du Sauvignon will be held from March 17 to 19, 2022 in Torres Vedras – a town around 50 kilometres north of Lisbon and part of the Lisbon wine region. In 2018 Torres Vedras was voted European Wine City.

The hilly vineyards of Torres Vedras cover an area of around 6,000 hectares and the wines produced there are protected by a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). The soils are primarily calcareous-clay classified as brown and red limestone.
The locally produced wines include full-bodied, deeply coloured reds that are bone dry and boast lengthy ageing potential, during which time they acquire the qualities for which they are renowned. The white wines are a light lemon-yellow colour with distinctive aromas and are highly prized as partners for a wide range of delicacies.

Tejo might be the most significant wine region for Sauvignon Blanc in Portugal, but in Torres Vedras the grape variety enjoys the moderating influence of the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in wines with character and elegance. Viticulture has an important impact on the economy as well as social and cultural life in Torres Verdes.

Year after year, the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon gathers together producers, sommeliers, distributors, journalists and key influencers from all strands of the industry to taste and evaluate some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc wines. Twenty nationalities including South Africa, New Zealand and the USA are represented on the tasting panel, thereby guaranteeing the outstanding diversity that sets the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon apart from other wine competitions.

In 2020, 1,110 wines from 24 producer countries worldwide competed in the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon, which makes it the largest and most significant international competition for Sauvignon wines on the planet. The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles has been commissioned to handle the technical organisation of the tastings and brings to the event the professionalism and independence for which foremost international competitions are renowned.

Over the past decade the competition has taken place in Sauvignon regions all over Europe including Bordeaux, Touraine, Styria, Rueda and Friuli. In 2022, for the first time in the history of the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon the host region is Portuguese.
